1. ⃣Human trafficking as defined by the department of Homeland Security is the illegal trade of humans for exploitation or commercial gains.
Exploitation involves forcing victims into prostitution or slavery
2⃣Human trafficking can be caused by:
➡Poverty, war, natural disasters or a search for a better life
➡Women and Children vulnerability
➡Demand for cheap labour
➡Difficulty in identifying cases of human trafficking
3⃣Initiatives to diminish the causes of Human trafficking includes:
▶International cooperation agreement
▶National policies against trafficking
▶Improved Immigration policies
▶Increased infrastructure to protect those that are being explored for labour or sex
4⃣Prosecution
The 2003 trafficking in persons law enforcement and administration act amended in 2005 to increase penalties for trafficking offenders prohibits all forms of human trafficking. The law prescribed penalties:
👉 five years imprisonment and or fine for labour trafficking.
👉10 years imprisonment for trafficking of children for forced begging or hawking
👉The law also criminalizes child trafficking
5⃣Protection
Agencies such as:
✅police
✅Custom
✅Immigration
✅NAPTIP have systematically employed procedures to identify victims among high risks person.
The 2003 trafficking in persons law enforcement and administration act provides for treatment,protection and non discriminatory practices for victims.
🔺We all have a role to play to stop human trafficking especially when it involves children, it is a criminal act be it within or outside the shores of Nigeria.
🔺Let us be a voice for the vulnerable child.
